In the ever-evolving world of engineering, #prioritization is the key to success. We're often presented with a multitude of tasks, each vying for attention. But how do we determine where to focus our efforts for maximum impact and efficiency?
đŻHere's a simple yet effective approach I rely on both professionally and in my personal time!
- What is the effort or cost to get the task done? Ie; # of engineer hours, investment, my time. Assign a 1-5 rating on that Effort.
- What is the impact or benefit of doing this work? Ie; revenue, operational efficiency, the faucet stops leaking. Assign a 1-5 rating on that Impact.
- How certain or confident am I of both of those estimates? Ie; it's been proven before, I can control all the factors, Iâve watched a couple videos on it. Assign 1-5 to that Confidence as well.
đNow, do math. Effort / Impact * Confidence = Priority
đ By combining impact, cost, and confidence, we create a data-driven matrix that guides our priorities. Tasks with the highest scores â indicating significant impact, manageable effort, and reasonable certainty â naturally rise to the top of our to-do list. Obviously other factors arise, but if you need a quick sort on a long list, try some simple prioritization math! đ„
